Pets in emergencies

Just as we need to prepare our families and properties in times of emergencies, we also need to prepare our animals.

The RSPCA recommends 3 essential steps for a pet emergency plan:

Include your pets in an emergency survival plan - this can include training your pet to be settled in a cage/carrier/crate/horse float; getting pets accustomed to vehicle trips; keeping vaccinations up to date.

  • Prepare your pet emergency kit - including food and water bowls, medications, blankets, toys; contact details for alternative accommodation; litter trays for cats and poo bags for dogs.
  • Practice your emergency survival plan - practice will help you refine your plan and help reduce anxiety and panic.
