Safety during storms

Storms can be a problem for some pets.

Dogs and cats, in particular, do not understand where the loud noises they can hear are coming from. They believe they’re in danger and will often try to escape.

Pets can suffer serious injuries while trying to get away from the noise. They can also become lost, creating other problems.

Create a safe space

Outdoors

  • Ensure a safe, dry shelter is available in an enclosed yard.
  • Check your fencing so that your pet doesn’t try to escape.
  • Provide fresh food, water and familiar items eg. toys, bedding and/ or a night light.
  • Remove any items that could get destroyed during a storm, some animals can become destructive when frightened.

Indoors

  • Close the curtains or blinds to reduce noise and bright flashes.
  • Create a safe place in a comfortable clean room with familiar items, fresh food and water.
  • Try creating a distraction eg:
    • Turn the volume up on your TV or radio.
    • Provide some treats or play a game.
    • Keep them company if they appear vulnerable or distressed.

Speak to your vet for additional ideas

  • Consider crate training to help your pet stay calm during a storm.
  • Enquire about other solutions like natural therapies, training techniques or comfort tools.
