Celebrate our 60th

The West Torrens Library Service is celebrating its diamond (60 years) anniversary this month and everyone is invited.

Come along on Thursday 21 November from 5pm - 7pm and take a step back into the 60s as we celebrate this amazing milestone.

The Library first opened to the community on 8 February 1964 and in the past 60 years it has undergone many transformations. From books to online, events to education, our Library Service has provided a popular meeting place for many and there are lots of stories to share.

We'll be celebrating 60s mod style with a live band, games from the era (hula hoop, hopscotch, knucklebones) and 60s style mocktails and food. We'll have a history room where you can see some of the original library equipment, old documents and photos and we're setting up a photobooth where you can have your photo taken inside the 'original' library. 

Everyone is encouraged to dress in their best 60s style and be part of this historical milestone.

Historical fact: The West Torrens Public Library and Auditorium was opened by the then Governor of South Australia, Sir Edric Bastyan. Hundreds of people turned out for the event, including around 250 school children. The library and its facilities were considered 'second to none' and was the 17th council library to be opened in South Australia.
