For more than 20 years, Anti-Poverty Week has been acknowledged in Australia around the 17 October, the UN Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Their purpose is to help Australians understand poverty and to take action collectively to end it. This year, Anti-Poverty Week 2024 will run from Sunday 13 October to Saturday 19 October.

The City of West Torrens acknowledges Anti-Poverty Week this year by:

  • Promoting the Library's free financial counselling and tax help
  • Asking the community to donate personal hygiene items to local charity ‘We Care in the West’. A collection bin will located inside the Hamra Centre Library, 1 Brooker Terrace, Hilton. Toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner and sanitary items are all needed.

We also want to remind our community that the range of services and activities at our library have a real benefit of saving you money. Rather than purchasing large amounts of books, toys, sporting equipment - borrow ours for free. We also have a range of freely available specialist collections including independent living tools, book club sets, baking accessories and neurodiversity assistance items.

If you are finding that the cost of living is restricting your ability to meet people, remember that we also run a wide array of free social activities for all ages. This includes movie nights, craft sessions, walking groups, and storytelling for toddlers and their parents. Search this website for more details.
