Adult Learners Week in Australia is part of an international festival of adult learning and is celebrated at the beginning of Spring. The City of West Torrens encourages lifelong learning and offers many opportunities throughout the year to learn new information and skills, however during Adult Learners Week we provide additional workshops, seminars and come-and-trys for our community to experience.

All of the events held during ALW are FREE, and bookings are required for ALL activities. The program is strictly for those aged 18 years and above – no creche provided, no children please.

Some activities may require you to complete and sign a waiver before commencing.

Notification of cancellation is required due to large waiting lists.

Some activities are available to West Torrens residents only and proof of residence is required.

Monday 2 September - Mess to Less

10:00-11:30AM

Auditorium, Hamra Centre Library

Reclaim your home by understanding the relationship we have with our belongings. This workshop helps you identify what clutter is, how it affects us and why we find it so difficult to deal with. You’ll learn how to overcome the many emotional and psychological obstacles we face when decluttering so you can turn your house into your haven! Staff from the City of West Torrens Waste & Resource Recovery Team will also be in attendance with information resources and goodies!

Monday 2 September - Come and Try Knitting

Have you always wanted to learn how to knit? Come and join some of the friendly and experienced members of our Monday Yarn Knitting group who will sit with you and teach you the basics of knitting. Feel free to bring your own knitting needles, or borrow ours; wool will be provided.

Monday 2 September - Come and Try Taekwondo

6:30-7:30PM

Torrensville Primary School

Rhee Taekwon-do is a traditional martial art taught in a fun, safe and family-friendly environment. This session is designed for adults who are new to this form of self defense. Attendees can expect lots of positive reinforcement from instructors and fellow students. Anyone of just about any fitness level can participate.

Tuesday 3 September - Core Strength

4:30-5:00pm; 5:15-5:45pm or 6:00-6:30pm

BodyMed, 188 Sir Donald Bradman Drive, Cowandilla

A core exercise class typically focuses on strengthening the muscles in the abdominal and lower back areas, as well as the muscles that support the pelvis and hips. The goal of a core exercise class is to improve overall core strength, stability, and balance, which can help to prevent injuries, improve posture, and enhance athletic performance. In addition to the physical benefits, core exercise classes may also help to reduce stress and improve mental focus, as many of the exercises require concentration and mindful breathing. One half hour timeslot per person. West Torrens residents only.


Wednesday 4 September - Accessibility Features on Your Devices

2:00-3:00PM

Learning Centre, Hamra Centre Library

This session is aimed at beginners who would like to learn more about the accessibility features available on their devices, and how they can make the most of them. These features can be useful for everyone who uses an Apple or Android mobile phone or tablet. From text size, colour changes, voice controls, to quick buttons and touch assistance – there are many hidden features in your device that can improve how you use it.

Wednesday 4 September - Adults With Autism - Learn About Autism

4:30-5:30PM

Join us for a free talk with Autism SA and hear about: an introduction to autism, the diagnostic process, and navigating the NDIS. This session is for adults who are exploring an autism diagnosis, or who live with adult family members who may be on the autism spectrum.

Thursday 5 September - Learn to Sew

2:00-3:00PM

Auditorium, Hamra Centre Library

Learn to sew or brush up on your sewing skills in this fun and informative session with Miss Libby Rose. You will learn the basics of the sewing machine and then get creative while upcycling fabrics into a brilliant cushion cover that you will feel confident in making again and again! All equipment and materials are provided.

Friday 6 September - Bouldering

7:00-8:00pm

Beyond Bouldering, 15 Croydon Road, Keswick

Bouldering is a type of rock climbing which involves climbing up small to medium-sized rock formations, known as boulders, without the use of ropes or harnesses. This indoor bouldering gym offers a range of climbing walls that simulate outdoor terrain, including overhangs, slabs, and vertical faces, with soft mats placed beneath to cushion your fall. Indoor bouldering is an excellent way to improve your strength, balance, and flexibility, while also challenging your problem-solving skills. Beginners are welcome and trained staff are available to guide and support you.

Registrations are essential, West Torrens residents only, please note that a waiver must be signed beforehand, participants must be 18+ yrs and over 120cm in height.
