Preparing for a storm event

During heavy rainfall events, some areas of West Torrens can experience localised flooding.

Depending on where you live, you may experience minor or heavy flooding. To help you understand how much localised flooding you may expect, we have developed a 'flood prone areas' map which details the flood risk in our suburbs.

Flood preparation

The SES has produced a number of checklists to help you prepare for a storm or flood. Just like people who live in bushfire risk areas should prepare for a fire, you should prepare for a localised flood if you live in an area prone to flooding. It's important that you know what level of water you may experience during heavy rainfall and how best to prepare yourself for any such event.

Five simple steps for flood preparation

  1. Know the local area - is there a history of flooding and how much?
  2. Know where to go to safety and the safe routes to get there.
  3. Keep a list of emergency contact numbers handy - life threatening emergency triple zero; emergency assistance - 132 500.
  4. Create an emergency kit including battery powered radio, torch and spare batteries.
  5. Check your insurance policy to ensure it covers you for flood.

Sandbags

One of the most common questions we are asked when there is flooding is where can sandbags be obtained from.

When flooding events occur, the SES will provide address locations where sandbags can be collected; this information will be updated as needed and can be found on their social media sites, as well as their website.

Sandbags can also be purchased from large hardware stores but it's advisable to keep them non-filled until they are needed as they can wear and disintegrate over time, making them ineffective.
