Henley Beach Road Visioning Project

In late 2024 we asked our community for their feedback on proposed ideas and visions to upgrade Henley Beach Road. Around 400 people participated, either in writing, online or in person at community drop-in sessions, with the overall response being in strong support of revitalising the area.

Henley Beach Road and its immediate surrounds are an important destination in West Torrens and, as such, we recognise the need to inject new life into the precinct we currently have.

During the past few decades, increases in infill development and traffic have impacted Henley Beach Road and, as a result, a long-term vision is being created to ensure that these issues are considered in future planning.

"Henley Beach Road is quite unique in that is has a series of different precincts and villages, with a diverse mix of businesses," Mayor Michael Coxon said.

"Over the years development has seen footpaths become quite narrow and traffic flows have increased, which have caused congestion, excess noise and emissions.

"We have a real opportunity to prepare a long-term strategy for this area and to improve its appeal for our local community and visitors. We are perfectly positioned to create this as a major tourism destination that is close to the Adelaide Airport and the city.

"Now that we have certainty around the Torrens to Darlington project, it's a prime time to begin plans for the revitalisation of this much-loved area."

Around 2 years ago, council staff and consultants engaged with business and property owners along Henley Beach Road to establish an idea of the current challenges and future needs being faced. As a result of this, a series of visions and concept plans were established, which we then asked the wider community to provide feedback on.

We now have a vision for Henley Beach Road, and 5 guiding principles which will help us achieve this. Further community consultation will take place as plans progress.

Consultation findings

  • High levels of support for the Henley Beach Road Vision and Guiding Principles.
  • Strong support for streetscape upgrades and revitalisation of the shopping and dining hearts. Suggestions of improved retail and hospitality mix, outdoor dining, greening and pedestrian-friendly upgrades.
  • Significant interest in better traffic management and car parking.
  • Strong support for more green space and trees and improved landscaping.
  • Support for a public transport priority corridor, a 'foods of the world' precinct and side-street piazza.
  • Walking and cycling a priority, including improved pedestrian crossings, bike lanes and safety measures; need to look at improved access for alternative mobility devices.

What's next?

The Henley Beach Road project is long-term and is still in its early stages. We are currently focussing on investigations, planning and future community engagement to help shape its future.

Given the project's complexity, it will be developed in phases. Pilot projects will be conducted to ensure that proposed improvements align with our community's needs. Elements such as streetscape upgrades, public transport improvements and enhancements to the shopping and dining precincts will take time to design, test and implement.
