Breakout Creek redevelopment

The final stage of revitalising the western end of Adelaide’s River Torrens / Karrawirra Pari is now open to the public, which means you can safely enjoy this beautifully transformed space.

The newly co-named Breakout Creek / Purruna Pari, the stretch of the Torrens where the river meets the sea at West Beach, has been transformed from an artificial channel to a natural-looking waterway.

It now has improved visitor amenities, a dedicated place for Kaurna reflection, habitat pools to enhance biodiversity and a new river crossing.

245,000 new plants and 111 new trees have been planted but we need to give them time to grow. There are still other enhancements to be delivered to this space, such as an elevated boardwalk to connect visitors through to Apex Park and the installation of nine Kaurna artworks across the site.

A dedicated horse area has been created that stretches nearly 800 metres along the southern riverbank and we expect the horses to return once the pasture area is established.

The project is a partnership between Green Adelaide, the Cities of West Torrens and Charles Sturt, the South Australian Attorney-General's Department (Planning and Development Fund), the Australian Government (Environment Restoration Fund) and SA Water.
