What the judges said

Judges were impressed by the large number of entries received for the prize and want to acknowledge all the artists who submitted entries including those that didn’t make it through the shortlisting process.

It really is so exciting to see so many talented artists in the community and selecting the prize winners was not an easy task.

In choosing the winning artworks judges focused on pieces that truly reflected time and place in line with the project brief – Moments in West Torrens?

Thebartonia Heart
Digital image, 120cm x 60cm

Thebartonia Heart depicts a collection of moments in time. The absence of background clutter aims to invoke a feeling that one’s entire world exists within the structure itself, along with nostalgic memories (of which I have many) and through time creating new ones.

Michael ‘MiC’ Chapman

A multidisciplinary creator since learning I was no good at sport. Currently creating a collection of digital images of iconic Adelaide, pubs of which this piece is part of.

Judges' comments

The artist’s approach transforms an iconic West Thebarton location into a stage for storytelling. By carefully editing the background, the artist has create a focused, almost theatrical tableau, allowing the viewer to delve into the setting and character dynamics. The elements of mise-en-scène—composition, staging, lighting and characters —work together to craft a dramatic atmosphere, encouraging a deep exploration of both character and place.

Sunset on Rankin
Acrylic, 90cm x 60cm, price:$3,500

One of the most precious times I have is evening walks with my child and being on the western side of the city, we are treated to spectacular sunsets. I love the play of light and colour in Ev’s hair and had a somewhat frustrating journey attempting to capture it.

Leesa Pertsinidis

I love capturing faces, the light, the personalities, the inner thoughts and the uniqueness. I have no formal art training, discovering a capability of being able to do portraits when assisting a friend in Malaysia and each new work is a journey of discovery.

Judges' comments

The artist has skilfully used light, colour, and brushwork to evoke a specific personal moment. By capturing both the character of the subject and setting it against the familiar West Torrens skyline, the portrait blends personal and regional identity. The contemporary composition and confident application of paint gives the work a bold presence, and adds a sense of time, place, and atmosphere bridging traditional portraiture with a fresh, local perspective.

Feet on the Tarmac
Digital print, 77cm x 57cm, price: $600

Arrivals at Adelaide airport over 12 months, international and domestic. Each dot is an aircraft. Each arrival a unique moment. The lines show the colours of the land and oceans passed over during the flight. The length of the lines is relative to the distance travelled, with Adelaide at the centre.

David Doull

Judges' comments

This work is an exercise in mapping and explores the skies over the West Torrens area in a unique way. Blending art, science, and statistics to map trajectories in time, the artist has created a layered and visually captivating effect reminiscent of celestial maps and astro photography and asks us to explore the invisible made visible.
