West Torrens Art Prize 2023 prizes have been awarded.
The successful shortlisted exhibition took place from Friday 3 November - Sunday 19 November.
West Torrens Art Prize Winner
Linear Park Trail, Lockleys
Oil on canvas, 112.5cm x 135cm
Life in West Torrens makes me think of my experiences travelling along the Linear Park Trail towards the beach, and seeing the horses grazing alongside the river. This work is intended as an expressive celebration of these beautiful animals that make this area in particular, so special.

I am a figurative artist working in a variety of mediums, but my preference is for oils and charcoal. Although my body of work generally reflects a more detailed approach to subjects, I relish the opportunity to explore the more expressive qualities of paint.
Judges Notes
This work has captured a subject matter that is instantly recognisable to the West Torren Area. The tight composition, restrained colour palette and expressive painterly style has created an engaging and evocative piece that celebrates the spirit of the area.

Airplane vs BMX
Photograph, 42cm x 60cm
Airplane VS BMX depicts the nostalgia and freedom of a young boy riding his bike on a Summers afternoon. Living near an airport has woven the tapestry of the sky into the fabric of his childhood, and each passing plane is a reminder that the World is as vast as his imagination.

I am a 38 year old mother of two boys, a wife, a business owner and photographer. I photograph the real, the raw, the emotion & joy in those moments that you want to savour forever. My preferred genres are documentary/lifestyle and weddings however I’m always looking to challenge myself!
Judges Notes
An engaging study of everyday life in the suburbs, that manages to capture movement and stillness at the same time. The composition and handling of light is well considered, and there is a rawness and familiarity that exudes warmth. Overall, a very interesting approach to suburban life.

AVINYA (Innovation & Beauty)

AVINYA in Sanskrit means ‘innovation and beauty’. This artwork is a reflection of my love for the folk art and it is inspired by the classic Phad art style from Rajasthan, India. It’s an amalgamation of traditional style and modern day-to-day life portrayed interestingly to engage the viewer.
Eksha Patidar
I’m a visual artist practicing various art styles in both acrylic and watercolours. I’m in love with folk art and have been practising different art forms since many years, such as Mithila art, Phad art, Kalamkari, Pitchwai and tribal art forms like Warli art etc. I run workshops and do commission works.
Judges Notes
This work is a celebration of the activity and architecture of the area. It is an homage to community and culture, and references traditional folk art & textile design in its complex composition.
People's Choice
Artist: Millie Ognowski
We have different styles - his is photorealism, whereas mine is more expressive. We wanted to create a piece that pays tribute to both of our styles, as well as to the stunning flora and fauna of our community.
Artwork: Kaleisdoscope
West Torrens is not only my home, but it is also a haven for wildlife. Our aim in Kaleidoscope was to showcase some of the diverse bird and insect life that exist in green spaces of our neighborhood - be that community park or backyard. This piece is my first attempt of artistic collaboration with my dad.
